It’s been two weeks since I come back from the 64th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting. Whenever I think about it again, I’m still excited and moved.

I remember in the opening ceremony, when the light music began and the 36 Nobel laureates walked slowly in to the meeting place, I was so moved. Those famous scientists who I have only known from the books are indeed standing in front of me! It is such a memorable moment. Every Nobel Laureate has his/her famous work and his/her own story to achieve that work. Their works promote the scientific development and their gathering gives us a chance to have a review of the major historical events in the history of science. At Lindau, we are so excitable to have close contact with Nobel Laureates who used to be so far away from us. Maybe the Laureates are just sitting next to you at the meeting, maybe the laureates are lining up after you at the buffet dinner, maybe the laureates are sharing the same coffee table with you and smiling at you…We can communicate almost whenever and wherever possible with Nobel laureates at Lindau. The congress has created numerous wonderful opportunities for us to exchange ideas with the laureates.

In the Lindau meeting, the Nobel laureate Juls A. Hoffmann impressed me the most. He is a specialist in innate immunity. Although I am not familiar with his work, he explained the profound theories in a simple language, which lead me to the unknown research area with interest. The presentation of Professor Hoffmann makes me deeply felt the charm of science. Professor Hoffmann is also a very modest person. Once, Professor Hoffmann just sat in front of me. During the coffee break, he happily exchanged ideas with us, patiently answered our questions, no matter how simple the questions were. He also showed great interest to our Chinese student and asked us one by one about our field of study and research work and so on. Professor Hoffmann has closed our distance to the Nobel laureates.

The week after the Lindau Nobel Laureate meeting, we have the chance to visit a number of research institutes and universities in Germany. It was a very efficient and productive experience. We had close communication with the head of different research institute and universities. These experiences have laid the foundation for our later follow-up study in Germany, and also helped us to understand the first-hand information about German research. During our visit to the laboratory, we can not only hear the detailed explanation, but also communicate with the students or researchers who are actually doing experiments. These gave us a more vivid view of the German way of doing research. Our amiable and lovely teachers Mr. Zhao Miaogen and Mr. Chen Lesheng from Sino-German Center gave us lots of care during the whole trip. From the introductions of the two teachers, we got the chance to understand various German history, humanities, science research, etc. The two teachers helped us in every way. With their help, not only the communication between us and the researchers in the German Research Institute went smoother, but also deeper mutual understanding between the members of our delegation was created. In this trip, our 29 members became more and more intimate, and gradually we became one family.

During the whole trip, the members of our delegation showed great care for each other. Although we only have a few days to get along, it seems we have already been friends who have known each other for a long time. It’s so great to have a trip like this with 29 excellent students for 2 weeks at the end of my Ph.D. study. So sad it will be hard for all of us to get together again.

Remember the fourteen days, and use countless fourteen days to remember…
